The
bi-state St. Louis region encompasses twelve counties, five
in Illinois and seven in Missouri. It is the 17th most populated
metropolitan area in the United States. St. Louis region is
home to over 2.6 million people, with more than 600,000 residing
in Illinois and 1.9 million in Missouri.
The
combined population of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon has increased
nearly 15% between 1980 and 1990 and 21% for the ten-year period
between 1990 and 1999. The present combined population is currently
32,270 and is projected to be at 34,400 by the year 2004. The
average age of the population is currently 35.67 years; the
median age is 36.60.
The
growth of this area has resulted from a number of factors including
the close proximity to St. Louis area; excellent educational
systems; available and affordable land that is prime for development;
the rural atmosphere with open spaces and wide range of recreational
amenities; and a wide choice of housing including well established
and planned neighborhoods.
